In the pioneering days of the Internet, circa late 1980’s and early 1990’s, a proliferation of various Internet search engines such as Yahoo, Lycos, AltaVista and Google emerged.  The growth of the number of users using the Internet and the magnitude of the content created, warranted more efficient software programs to search the sea of data to retrieve the relevant information of interest for the searcher.

While various search engines emerged, others quickly faded into obscurity as dramatic growth and demise lifecycles are extremely common in the technology space due to the every changing consumer preference.  Established and incumbent companies declaring bankruptcies or being acquired by other rapidly emerging players is a frequent occurrence in the technology sector and a trend which continues today.
